Echocardiography
This diagnosis technique is used to observe the movement and structure of the heart for a better assessment.
It is based on ultrasound to examine the functions of heart, arteries and veins.
Through a simple technique, it is possible to evaluate anatomical (malformations, size of chambers and heart walls, etc) and functional (appropriate functions of cardiac valves, contractility of myocardium, etc) aspects. It may be used to evaluate and diagnose ischemic heart disease (Stress test with Echocardiography).
Ultrasounds are performed through the chest wall (transthoracic echocardiogram or TTE), but rarely they can also be performed by inserting in the patient’s esophagus a specialized scope that contains an echocardiography transducer (TEE probe). This is called transesophageal echocardiogram (or TEE), and the patient requires light sedation for it.
