Colposcopy
A colposcopy is a modern examination technique of the cervical and vaginal tissues. It is used to observe in detail any possible problem in the female reproductive system.
Genitals, vagina and cervix are examined closely with this procedure.
A colposcope is an instrument with a light that zooms the cervix area observed by the doctor.
The patient lies down and puts her legs in a couple of braces in the same way it is done for a Papanicolaou’s test”. The doctor inserts a speculum in the vagina and opens it slowly so that the cervix can be seen. From this point on, the doctor decides the following steps to continue with the procedure. The area is usually covered with a special solution in order to observe the area easily and see if any tissue presents problems.
If necessary, the doctor can also take a sample of tissue to be examined in a lab (biopsy).
The entire procedure usually takes from 20 to 30 minutes (both colposcopy and biopsy).
It is important to mention that this is a painless examination, and it is possible to detect any problem efficiently so that it can be treated immediately. |
