Ophthalmoscopy
This procedure is a specialized observation of the inside eye structure, and it must be carried out by an Ophthalmologist.
It is a common routine in ophthalmic services, and it can be performed through different exploratory techniques. It is possible to obtain information of the most important structures behind the eye, give a diagnosis, and check different ophthalmic pathologies.
There are different techniques to perform an ophthalmoscopy. Generally, the patient’s pupil needs to be dilated before the examination.
The Ophthalmologist uses ophthalmoscopes to visualize the eye. There is a direct ophthalmoscope that allows the explorer to look through one of the eyes, and also an indirect one that permits visualizing both eyes of the explorer. It is also possible to carry it out with a slit lamp.
All these methods are based on a light that is projected on the patient’s eye through a lens system. There is no pain in this kind of examination.
